Lets talk about flooding

How can we prevent flood damage

Flooding is a large issue costing about 8 billion dollars in damage every year. Flooding can be due to storm surges, heavy rain, or dam/levee failures, and all of them can cause severe damage, and loss of life. Flooding is up to 6 times more prevalent in urban areas because all the concrete in cities collects water, and doesn't let it drain into the ground, so when the drain pipes are full, the water has nowhere to go. We hope to mitigate this issue by allowing the ground to naturally absorb as much water as possible. We plan to do this using reservoir parks and porous concrete.

Porous concrete

Porous concrete is concrete that uses less sand in its production so there are holes in its surface allowing water to flow through it, but it also can do the job of regular concrete in small roads and parking lots. This means water can flow through the concrete instead of pooling on top of it, reducing flooding.

Reservoir parks

Reservoir parks are parks that can be used like regular parks when it is dry, but when it begins to flood these parks are slightly sunken below ground level, so they can hold water. Allowing cost effective, neighborhood parks to help reduce flooding.
